Some Things to See and Do
There is much to interest you in this beautiful area of South West of Scotland, no matter what your tastes and pursuits demand. Our rural roads are gentle, our countryside is colourful and varied. You are never far from the coast, from great views, or from general peace and quiet.

Golf. There are 31 local golf courses. Kirkcudbright Golf Course (18 hole) is less than ten minutes walk away, and Brighouse Bay (18 holes) is less than 15 minutes drive. There is also a family par-3 golf course and driving range just outside the town

Dingy Sailing is popular along our sheltered coastline.

Walking. Areas of the Colvend Coast have well maintained and signed walks and these have recently been extended into mature woodland giving access to a great variety of pathways and habitat, many with superb views over the estuary and the Solway Firth beyond. Other areas have been opened up by the Forestry Commission and of course the Galloway Uplands are only a short drive away.

Sailing. Kirkcudbright has a small deep-water marina which has a few berths reserved for visiting cruisers, and has a very active sailing club. The coast in the area has several quiet bays where our mild weather can be enjoyed and where dingy sailing is very popular. Only half an hour away is Loch Ken Sailing Club where all sorts of water sports can be tried.

Bird Watching. This area of coast is very popular with bird-watchers. We are only a 25 miles or so from the RSPB sanctuary at Mersehead and at Rockcliffe and Rough Island, the National Trust for Scotland manages a nature and bird reserve. In winter the Solway is home to a large flock of Barnacle Geese.

Cycling. National Cycle Route 7 passes through Kirkcudbright, and the Forestry Commission have opened up much of their land to cyclists, but there are just hundreds of little side-roads in the area where family cycling is safe and undemanding.
